Before the Gundam family stopped at Unit 3, there was G04 – a space-combat Gundam carrying a weapon powerful enough to become a danger to its own pilot.
The MG 1/100 RX-78-4 Gundam G04 brings one of the lesser-seen RX-78 development machines to the Master Grade range. Appearing in Mobile Suit Gundam Side Story: Space, To the End of a Flash, G04 is piloted by Luce Cassel and was developed as a high-performance space-combat machine.
Originally released by Bandai in July 2003, this classic Master Grade comes with removable booster equipment, detailed mechanical sections and, most importantly, the enormous Mega Beam Launcher.
RX-78-4 Gundam Unit 4 – G04
The famous RX-78-2 wasn’t the end of the RX-78 development programme.
Gundam Unit 4, commonly known as G04, represents a further evolution of the Federation’s Gundam technology during the closing stages of the One Year War.
While unmistakably related to Amuro Ray’s RX-78-2, G04 was configured specifically for space combat.
Additional propulsion, increased operating range and much heavier beam weaponry transformed the familiar Gundam concept into something considerably more specialised.
From Space, To the End of a Flash
G04 features prominently in Mobile Suit Gundam Side Story: Space, To the End of a Flash alongside its sister machine, the RX-78-5 Gundam G05.
Assigned to the 16th Autonomous Mobile Squadron aboard the Pegasus-class Thoroughbred, G04 is piloted by Luce Cassel.
G04 and G05 make a fantastic pair.
G04 is immediately identifiable by its blue detailing and enormous Mega Beam Launcher, while G05 uses red accents and carries its distinctive Giant Gatling.
Put the two MG kits together and you’ve got one of the best-looking lesser-known RX-78 pairings from the Universal Century.
The Mega Beam Launcher
This is the reason G04 exists.
The enormous Mega Beam Launcher is a long-range, extremely high-output beam weapon developed to give Gundam Unit 4 devastating anti-ship firepower.
The weapon is huge even by Gundam standards, with the in-universe launcher measuring approximately 12 metres long.
Bandai gives it plenty of attention in the Master Grade.
The weapon’s energy cable is recreated using a lead wire, connecting the launcher to G04’s additional power equipment.
It’s one of those accessories that immediately changes the entire appearance of the finished model.
G04 without the launcher looks like an advanced RX-78.
G04 holding the launcher looks like it’s about to delete something several kilometres away.
A Weapon with a Serious Problem
There’s a catch.
The Mega Beam Launcher requires an enormous amount of energy.
G04’s upgraded generator still wasn’t sufficient to power the weapon independently, so an additional energy pack was required. The system remained unstable during development.
That becomes extremely important to G04’s story.
Without wandering too deeply into spoiler territory, the Mega Beam Launcher isn’t simply another enormous Gundam weapon included because it looks impressive.
Its limitations and instability are central to the machine’s identity.
Removable Booster Equipment
G04’s space-combat configuration incorporates additional equipment around the shoulders and backpack.
Bandai allows the additional shoulder thrusters and propellant tanks to be removed, meaning the model can be displayed in either its standard configuration or the enhanced form.
It’s a particularly nice feature if you’re displaying G04 alongside G05.
You can configure both machines differently rather than having them appear almost identical apart from their colours and signature weapons.
Propellant Tanks
The additional propellant tanks aren’t simply decorative.
G04 was intended for extended space operations, so increased fuel capacity was essential alongside the additional thrusters.
On the model they also dramatically change the rear silhouette.
Add everything and G04 looks like a heavily upgraded late-war prototype.
Remove the equipment and the original RX-78 lineage becomes considerably easier to see.
Forearm Beam Guns
G04 carries Beam Guns built into its forearms, giving the machine additional ranged capability without relying entirely on handheld weapons.
On the MG, these components can be removed to reveal detailed mechanical moulding underneath the connection points.
It’s a classic Master Grade touch.
Parts aren’t simply attached to blank plastic.
Remove them and Bandai gives you something mechanical underneath to look at.
Removable Rear Leg Thrusters
The thruster components behind the lower legs can also be detached.
Again, Bandai has reproduced mechanical detailing around the exposed mounting areas.
For builders who enjoy displaying partially disassembled Mobile Suits in maintenance scenes, details like these can be particularly useful.
Take the armour and equipment away.
Add some paint to the exposed mechanical sections.
Suddenly a relatively straightforward 2003 MG becomes a great hangar-display project.
Hyper Beam Rifle
G04 isn’t permanently tied to the Mega Beam Launcher.
A more conventional Beam Rifle is also supplied.
This is particularly useful when displaying the machine without its additional heavy equipment.
Beam Rifle equipped and boosters removed, G04’s relationship to the original RX-78 becomes much more obvious.
Beam Sabers
Two Beam Sabers are included for close combat.
They’re conventional weapons compared with the absurdly powerful Mega Beam Launcher, but they give G04 the expected Gundam melee capability and considerably more posing options.
Mega Beam Launcher for warships.
Beam Rifle for normal combat.
Beam Saber for anything unfortunate enough to get close.
Folding Shield
G04 also receives a distinctive folding shield.
Unlike the familiar solid RX-78-2 shield, this unit can change configuration through its folding mechanism.
It’s another relatively small feature that helps distinguish Gundam Unit 4 from its much more famous predecessor.
Pull-Out Shoulder Joints
Remember that enormous Mega Beam Launcher?
Bandai needed the model to actually hold it.
The shoulder joints therefore incorporate a forward pull-out mechanism, allowing the arms to reach further forward and making two-handed weapon poses easier to achieve.
For a Master Grade originally engineered in 2003, it’s a useful feature.
Get both hands around the Mega Beam Launcher and G04 immediately looks considerably more convincing.
Double-Structure Ankle Joints
The ankles also received additional attention.
Bandai uses a double-joint structure designed to improve foot contact when the legs are positioned in a wider stance.
That’s particularly useful when trying to create a stable firing pose with the enormous launcher.
Wide stance.
Both hands on the weapon.
Mega Beam Launcher aimed.
Now it looks ready to fire.
Whether firing it is actually a good idea is another matter entirely.
Detailed Backpack
The backpack includes removable exterior armour.
Take the outer sections away and mechanical moulding is revealed underneath, giving builders additional detailing and painting opportunities.
It’s another reminder that although this is an older Master Grade, Bandai was already experimenting with the layered mechanical construction that would become increasingly elaborate in later MG releases.
Classic 2003 Master Grade Engineering
This is important for anyone approaching G04 after building modern MG releases.
The MG Gundam G04 dates from 2003.
Its construction is therefore considerably different from something like an MG Ver.Ka released twenty years later.
Don’t expect the enormous fully realised internal skeleton found in many newer Master Grades. Contemporary listings note that G04 doesn’t use the kind of comprehensive inner-frame construction that later became commonplace across the MG line.
Instead, you get a straightforward older-school Master Grade with mechanical detailing concentrated where it matters.
That isn’t necessarily a disadvantage.
Sometimes it’s nice to build a 1/100 kit without discovering you’ve somehow committed the entire weekend to assembling one knee.
Brilliant Customisation Potential
G04 is an excellent candidate for additional detailing.
The predominantly white and blue armour provides plenty of opportunity for subtle colour variation, while the additional space-combat equipment lends itself brilliantly to mechanical finishes.
Try adding metallic detail to the thrusters.
Paint the exposed backpack machinery.
Add heat staining around the propulsion equipment.
Detail the Mega Beam Launcher cable.
Apply subtle panel lining.
Add Federation markings.
Then finish the armour with a matte top coat.
The result can look like a genuine late-One-Year-War experimental machine rather than another clean hero Gundam.
Pair It with Gundam G05
If you’re buying G04, there’s an obvious problem.
You’re probably going to want MG Gundam G05 as well.
Bandai released the G04 in July 2003 and followed it with the MG RX-78-5 G05 in August 2003.
The two machines share their developmental background but have dramatically different signature weapons.
G04: enormous Mega Beam Launcher.
G05: Giant Gatling.
Blue versus red.
Luce Cassel versus Ford Romfellow.
They were practically designed to sit together on a shelf.

Why Add RX-78-4 Gundam G04 MG 1/100 to Your Collection?
Because G04 represents one of the most interesting branches of the original RX-78 family.
It still has enough of the classic Gundam DNA to be immediately recognisable, but the blue armour, additional space thrusters, propellant tanks, forearm weapons and specialised equipment give Unit 4 a personality completely separate from the RX-78-2.
And then there’s that Mega Beam Launcher.
It’s enormous.
It’s connected to the machine through a dedicated energy system.
And within G04’s story, its incredible firepower comes with potentially catastrophic consequences.
For Universal Century collectors, RX-78 completionists, fans of the lesser-known Gundam side stories or anyone planning to pair G04 with the equally brilliant MG G05, this classic Master Grade deserves a place in the collection.
Boosters fitted. Propellant loaded. Mega Beam Launcher connected. RX-78-4 G04 proves that sometimes the answer to “How much beam weapon can we put on a Gundam?” is simply “Too much.”
