Build Amuro Ray’s ultimate Mobile Suit with the spectacular RX-93 ν Gundam Ver.Ka MG 1/100 from Bandai. Based on the legendary ν Gundam from Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack, this Master Grade release reinterprets the machine through the unmistakable design language of Hajime Katoki.
Released in 2012, the ν Gundam Ver.Ka represented a huge leap over the original Master Grade ν Gundam. It combines an extensively detailed internal frame, opening armour, exposed green Psycho-Frame, six individually articulated Fin Funnels, water-slide markings and an impressive weapon loadout into one enormous 1/100 scale package.
Amuro Ray’s Final Gundam
The RX-93 ν Gundam was developed for legendary Federation pilot Amuro Ray during the events of Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack.
Designed with Amuro’s own input and manufactured by Anaheim Electronics, the ν Gundam represented the culmination of his experience piloting machines stretching all the way back to the original RX-78-2.
Its combination of exceptional mobility, powerful conventional weapons and Psycho-Frame technology created a machine capable of taking on Char Aznable’s MSN-04 Sazabi during the final battle of the Second Neo Zeon War.
It’s one of the most important Gundams in the entire Universal Century.
The Hajime Katoki Treatment
The Ver.Ka designation means this isn’t simply the standard ν Gundam reproduced at 1/100 scale.
Legendary mechanical designer Hajime Katoki reworked the design with sharper mechanical detailing and the extensive technical markings that have become synonymous with Ver.Ka releases.
The overall silhouette remains unmistakably ν Gundam, but look closer and there’s considerably more happening across the armour.
Panel lines, warning markings, mechanical details and revised proportions give the completed model the appearance of an enormous piece of military hardware rather than simply an enlarged anime design.
Psycho-Frame Transformation
One of the standout features of the MG ν Gundam Ver.Ka is something the original ν Gundam wasn’t normally shown doing on screen.
Sections of the external armour can slide and expand, revealing translucent green Psycho-Frame components underneath.
Bandai also uses this feature on special editions of the Ver.Ka, describing the mechanism as expanding the frame and exposing Psycho-Frame sections throughout the machine.
This effectively gives you two different ways to display the Gundam.
Keep everything closed for the familiar Char’s Counterattack appearance, or deploy the armour to reveal the glowing green Psycho-Frame beneath.
Six Fin Funnels
You can’t have the ν Gundam without the Fin Funnels.
Six enormous funnels mount asymmetrically to the Gundam’s backpack, creating one of the most recognisable silhouettes in Gundam history.
Each funnel can be separated and deployed individually, allowing you to recreate the ν Gundam’s remote attacks and defensive Fin Funnel barrier.
The funnels are large enough that, once all six are attached, the finished MG becomes an extremely imposing display piece.
Display the Fin Funnels in Flight
The kit’s display system allows the Fin Funnels to be presented separately from the Gundam, creating the appearance of them deploying around Amuro’s machine.
This is where the Ver.Ka really starts looking spectacular.
Rather than simply having six rectangles hanging from the backpack, you can create a full combat display with the funnels surrounding the ν Gundam.
And if six somehow isn’t enough, Bandai also produced a Double Fin Funnel Custom Unit containing another six Fin Funnels, beam effects, connecting arms and a dedicated display base for the MG ν Gundam Ver.Ka.
Because apparently twelve Fin Funnels is a perfectly reasonable amount of Fin Funnels.
Beam Rifle
The ν Gundam’s distinctive Beam Rifle is included for conventional ranged combat.
Its long, angular design complements the proportions of the Gundam and looks fantastic combined with the shield and Fin Funnel equipment.
Pose Amuro’s machine advancing with the rifle or create a full combat display with the Fin Funnels deployed around it.
New Hyper Bazooka
For considerably heavier firepower, the kit includes the New Hyper Bazooka.
This substantial weapon gives the ν Gundam another display option and can be incorporated into the Gundam’s equipment when not being actively used.
The combination of rifle, bazooka and Fin Funnels gives this machine enough firepower to look suitably prepared for its showdown with Char.
Beam Sabers
The ν Gundam also carries Beam Sabers for close combat.
These allow you to recreate the more personal stages of Amuro and Char’s final confrontation.
And sometimes, after deploying six funnels, firing the bazooka and emptying the Beam Rifle, you just need to settle things with a glowing sword.
Shield
The ν Gundam’s distinctive shield completes the standard weapon loadout.
Its large white surface also provides another area for the detailed Ver.Ka markings, tying it visually into the heavily marked armour of the Gundam itself.
Combined with the rifle and Fin Funnel backpack, it produces the definitive ν Gundam silhouette.
Detailed Internal Frame
Underneath all that armour is an extensive Master Grade internal frame.
The frame provides the mechanical foundation for the Gundam while also offering plenty of detail for experienced builders who enjoy painting internal components.
The Gunpla UK listing highlights the Ver.Ka’s lighter non-ABS frame construction as one of the major engineering changes compared with the earlier MG ν Gundam.
Try adding metallic shades to the pistons, joints and mechanical components before fitting the armour.
You may barely see some of it when you’re finished.
You’ll know it’s there.
That’s Master Grade building.
Optional LED Illumination
The ν Gundam Ver.Ka is compatible with a separately sold Bandai LED unit, allowing the head cameras to illuminate.
It’s a relatively small effect compared with the enormous model surrounding it, but in a darker display the illuminated head looks fantastic.
The LED unit is sold separately.
Water-Slide Decals
This is a Ver.Ka.
Of course there are markings.
The kit includes water-slide decals featuring the extensive technical markings associated with Hajime Katoki’s designs.
Applying them takes considerably longer than leaving the armour clean, but they’re a major part of the intended Ver.Ka appearance.
Once applied and sealed beneath a matte top coat, they transform the enormous white armour panels.
A Serious Master Grade Project
This isn’t a tiny evening build.
The ν Gundam itself is large.
Then you’ve got six Fin Funnels.
Then the weapons.
Then the transformation components.
Then the decals.
The result is exactly the sort of substantial project that makes Master Grade Ver.Ka kits so satisfying.
Take your time with it and there’s a huge amount of model here to enjoy.
Take the Build Further
Experienced builders can turn the ν Gundam Ver.Ka into something genuinely spectacular.
Try adding:
- Full panel lining
- Ver.Ka water-slide decals
- Metallic internal-frame details
- Painted thrusters
- Psycho-Frame detailing
- Subtle armour shading
- Matte top coat
- Weapon weathering
- Custom Amuro Ray markings
- LED head illumination
- Fin Funnel effect displays
The enormous white armour surfaces provide plenty of room for additional detailing without making the finished model look overcrowded.
The Ultimate Char’s Counterattack Display
There is one obvious companion for this model:
MSN-04 Sazabi Ver.Ka.
Put the two together and you’ve got one of the definitive Master Grade displays.
Amuro’s enormous white-and-black ν Gundam.
Char’s massive crimson Sazabi.
Fin Funnels.
Funnels.
Beam weapons.
And several decades of unresolved personal issues.
That’s Char’s Counterattack.
