Both myself and Steve at Gunpla UK were interested in seeing the quality of the new HGBB line of kits so he gifted me a kit of my choice to build and review, since he currently doesn’t have much time to build himself.
Being someone that tends towards high detail, time consuming MG kits and custom projects I wanted to see how a modern “shelf filler” HG kit compared to these and what could be done with it in a short space of time.
I gave myself 12 hours total build time to build and customise this kit, using only basic tools of Gundam markers, panel lining, and spare bandai water decals from MG kits that I’d opted to use 3rd party made sets on. I chose the Qan[t] as I thought it was the best looking kit from this line and came with several cool looking weapons.
Initial thoughts when I got this kit off the runners was that I hated the stock orange parts for the ankles and a few other parts, and wasn’t too keen on the flexible grey rubber used for the weapon blades. The kit also came with no detail stickers, just metallics which I ended up not using at all, and had very minimal colour separation so that was something I had to fix.
I chose to emphasise the very military feel this kit already had and darken it overall, using XGM05 dark metallic, GM05 silver, Molotow chrome, and generic black ink markers to add colour separation, some detail in the moulded features, and to change the orange and red parts to something more fitting.
Following this I did a very simple panel line job using black on the dark green and grey parts, and olive green on the lighter armour parts. I tried to keep this quite factory fresh looking so didn’t line the weapons at all.
I finished the kit by adding quite a lot of white decals to really make it pop and add something to break up the large flat areas that this kit suffers from. A Matt top coat sealed on all my work and gave it a nice flat paint look that pulled the glossier pens and plastic into the same finish as the more Matt decals and markers.
10.5 hours of work and I was really happy with what I had made. Going into posing and placing this kit I was actually really impressed with it.
This might not go for every suit from the HGBB line but I was amazed and the level of posability that I could get with this little guy! All the poses in the photos are not propped up or straining the joints in any way and he really does look ready for combat.
Another thing I liked was that other than his shield the main weapons can be stored individually or simultaneously on his backpack, and the weapons really look the part with this kit. Having a main gun, shield, big sword and two cool daggers in this kit really makes it feel like you’re getting more for your money when the build itself isn’t much bigger or bulkier than something like a HG Dynames.
I’m really actually quite impressed with this kit and definitely reccomend you picking up something from the HGBB line to have fun with. These kits are all about being interchangable and customisation so are the perfect thing to test out a new technique on or just have fun with and see where your inspiration takes you.
