The SD Gundam EX-Standard Sinanju recreates the fearsome MSN-06S Sinanju from Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn in Bandai’s modernised EX-Standard proportions. Released in August 2016, the kit combines the exaggerated head and compact body of an SD Gundam with improved articulation and weapon compatibility compared with traditional Super Deformed releases.

The Sinanju is one of the most instantly recognisable Neo Zeon Mobile Suits of the Universal Century.

Piloted by Full Frontal, the machine serves as the flagship Mobile Suit of the Sleeves during the events of Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn.

Its bright red armour immediately brings Char Aznable’s legendary machines to mind, while the elaborate gold-trimmed Neo Zeon decoration gives Sinanju a much more extravagant appearance.

And somehow that design still works when you give it an enormous head and tiny legs.

Sinanju plays a major role throughout Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn, where its exceptional speed and mobility make it an extremely dangerous opponent for the RX-0 Unicorn Gundam.

Unlike the bulky designs associated with some earlier Neo Zeon machines, Sinanju has a much sleeker silhouette.

The curved armour, enormous thrusters and distinctive shield give it an elegant appearance that contrasts brilliantly against the much more angular Unicorn.

Piloted by Full Frontal

The Sinanju is piloted by Full Frontal, the mysterious masked leader of the Sleeves.

Known as the “Second Coming of Char”, Full Frontal’s association with the machine explains the unmistakable red colour scheme.

It’s also responsible for Sinanju spending a considerable amount of time moving at speeds that probably aren’t ideal for anyone’s insurance premiums.

SD Gundam EX-Standard

Bandai’s SD Gundam EX-Standard range takes the traditional SD concept and gives it a more contemporary appearance.

You still get the oversized head and compact body.

But the arms and legs are slightly longer and slimmer than many older SD designs, creating proportions better suited to action poses.

The result sits somewhere between classic comedy-proportioned SD Gundam and a miniature action-oriented Gunpla.

Improved Articulation

One of the biggest advantages of the EX-Standard design is articulation.

Despite the compact proportions, Sinanju can achieve a good selection of action poses thanks to articulated shoulders, elbows, hips and knees.

That’s particularly important with Sinanju.

This isn’t a Mobile Suit that should spend its entire life standing perfectly upright.

Give it the Beam Rifle.

Angle the shield.

Lean the body forward.

And you’ve immediately got something much closer to Full Frontal’s aggressive combat style.

Even with the exaggerated SD proportions, Bandai retains the recognisable shape of the weapon.

It’s a great choice for straightforward display poses and helps balance the enormous shield on the opposite arm.

The large shield is another essential part of the design.

Its sweeping Neo Zeon shape survives the transition into SD proportions surprisingly well and gives the finished model considerably more presence.

Mounted alongside the red armour and gold decorative details, it’s unmistakably Sinanju.

Beam Axe Equipment

Sinanju’s close-combat equipment is represented too, allowing you to move away from the standard Beam Rifle pose and give the little red monster something considerably more aggressive.

That’s part of the appeal of EX-Standard kits.

They’re small.

They’re cute.

Then you hand them an axe.

Gold Sleeves Detailing

One of Sinanju’s defining visual features is the elaborate gold decoration across its chest, cuffs and other armour sections.

On a full-size MG, those areas can involve some very careful detailing.

On an SD kit, you’re working with a much smaller surface.

The EX-Standard uses stickers to help reproduce many of these intricate colour details, making the kit accessible to newer builders.

Experienced builders can take things considerably further with paint.

Excellent Little Painting Project

In fact, Sinanju is one of those SD kits that can really benefit from additional work.

The basic build is quick and accessible, but the design gives experienced builders plenty to play with.

Paint the gold Sleeves decoration.

Add metallic details to the thrusters.

Panel line the red armour.

Paint the internal weapon details.

Add gloss to the exterior armour.

Or go completely overboard with metallic red and gold.

Understatement was never really part of the design brief.

Weapon Combination Gimmick

A particularly interesting feature of the SD EX-Standard range is its weapon-combination system.

Weapons and equipment can be rearranged into original configurations, while parts are designed with compatibility with selected HG 1/144 kits in mind.

That gives builders additional opportunities for customisation beyond simply building Sinanju exactly as shown in the instructions.

It’s particularly fun if you’ve got several EX-Standard kits and start mixing their equipment together.

Quick & Accessible Build

This is a great choice for newer Gunpla builders.

Construction is snap-fit.

Glue isn’t required for normal assembly.

The major colours are recreated through moulded plastic and stickers.

And the relatively low parts count means you can have a completed Sinanju considerably faster than tackling an RG or MG version.

It’s also a brilliant little kit for experienced builders wanting something relaxing between larger projects.
