Take a trip back to one of the great mecha series of the 1980s with the MODEROID Galient Heavy Armor Kai, based on the upgraded Galient from Panzer World Galient. Produced by Good Smile Company, this substantial non-scale model kit stands approximately 180mm tall and combines classic anime styling with modern articulation, transformation features and an absolutely ridiculous amount of weaponry.
Panzer World Galient
Originally broadcast in the 1980s, Panzer World Galient combines medieval fantasy imagery with advanced mechanical warfare.
Rather than the military science-fiction environments associated with Gundam, Galient exists in a world of kingdoms, swords, armour and enormous mechanical warriors known as Panzer World machines.
That combination gives Galient a distinctive appearance even today.
It’s essentially a giant red mechanical knight.
Which is already a very good starting point.
Galient Heavy Armor Kai
The Heavy Armor Kai takes the recognisable red Galient and turns everything up considerably.
Additional armour and heavy weapon systems transform the machine from an already formidable combat unit into something much more imposing.
The MODEROID kit is particularly interesting because you aren’t restricted to the upgraded configuration.
Using the included components, both the standard Galient and Galient Heavy Armor can be recreated.
That gives builders considerably more display potential than a straightforward single-configuration model.
Approximately 180mm Tall
Once assembled, Galient stands approximately 180mm tall.

Galient Sword

Rather than simply including a conventional solid sword, Good Smile recreates several configurations of the weapon.

The sheath itself also incorporates a transformation mechanism.
A 370mm Whip Blade
The whip configuration deserves special attention.
When deployed, the weapon measures approximately 370mm long – more than twice the height of Galient itself.
Good Smile used special injection-moulding techniques to create the whip from a flexible cord containing an iron core with plastic blade sections seamlessly incorporated around it.
The result is a genuinely flexible weapon rather than a collection of rigid pieces pretending to be one.
At nearly 37cm long, it also gives the finished display some serious presence.

Multiple Transformation Forms
This is where the Heavy Armor Kai becomes considerably more interesting than a standard articulated model kit.

The weapon can be connected to the energy tubes on Galient’s legs using the included lead wires, recreating the distinctive heavy-weapon configuration from the series.
It can also be combined with the shield for an even more imposing firing arrangement.
Flying Cannon
A Flying Cannon is also included among Galient’s armaments.
Combined with the Heavy Cannon, sword and shield, this gives you considerably more equipment than you’d find in a typical MODEROID release.
Swap the weapons around and the character of the model changes dramatically.
Deployable Shield
The shield isn’t simply a lump of armour attached to the arm.
It can combine with the Heavy Cannon and includes extendable support stakes.
Deploy the stakes and the shield can help support the weapon during a stationary firing configuration.
It’s a brilliant little mechanical detail and exactly the sort of feature that makes this kit interesting beyond its appearance.
Opening Cockpit
The model also includes an opening cockpit hatch.
Open it and you’ll find the spherical cockpit unit recreated inside the machine.
It’s one of those details that could easily have been ignored on a model of this size, but its inclusion gives builders another reason to spend some time looking closely at the completed kit.
Colour-Separated Construction
Like other modern MODEROID releases, Galient uses parts moulded in multiple colours alongside selected pre-painted components.
This means the characteristic appearance of the machine can be recreated with straightforward assembly without requiring a complete paint job.
Experienced builders can obviously take things considerably further.

Galient’s armour is particularly well suited to additional finishing work.
