Bring one of anime’s most iconic police mecha to your collection with the Bandai MG 1/35 AV-98 Ingram 2 from Mobile Police Patlabor, recreating the second Special Vehicles Section 2 Ingram in detailed Master Grade form.

The AV-98 Ingram 2 MG 1/35 takes the distinctive police Labor designed by Shinohara Heavy Industries and gives it the full Master Grade treatment, complete with detailed internal construction, cockpit, pilot figure and the weapons and equipment associated with the Ingram.

Originally released by Bandai in August 2002, the Ingram 2 remains an impressive alternative for builders looking beyond traditional Gundam designs.

AV-98 Ingram

The AV-98 Ingram is the advanced police Labor operated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Special Vehicles Section 2, Division 2 in Mobile Police Patlabor.

Unlike Gundams and other military Mobile Suits, the Ingram is fundamentally a law-enforcement machine.

Its distinctive black-and-white police colour scheme, shoulder lights, protective armour and conventional-looking equipment immediately separate it from the brightly coloured combat mecha normally associated with Bandai model kits.

The result is a design that manages to look futuristic while still being strangely believable as a piece of police equipment.

Ingram Unit 2

This kit specifically recreates Ingram Unit 2, traditionally associated with Isao Ota of Special Vehicles Section 2.

And if Noa Izumi treats Ingram Unit 1 like a treasured partner, Ota’s approach to police work is somewhat more…

Enthusiastic.

The Unit 2 head design gives the machine a noticeably different appearance from Ingram Unit 1, making both models worth displaying together for dedicated Patlabor collectors.

Isao Ota’s Patrol Labor

Isao Ota is known for his aggressive enthusiasm and willingness to reach for the Revolver Cannon considerably sooner than his colleagues might prefer.

That personality makes Unit 2 one of the most entertaining Labors in Patlabor.

The Ingram itself might have been designed for law enforcement and public safety.

Ota occasionally seems determined to test just how much of the surrounding public remains safe while he’s doing it.

Master Grade at 1/35 Scale

Rather than the 1/100 scale associated with most Master Grade Gundam kits, Bandai’s Patlabor MG series uses 1/35 scale.

That larger scale is appropriate because Labors are substantially smaller than most Gundam Mobile Suits.

The result is a model with enough physical size to accommodate detailed mechanical construction while still accurately representing the more compact dimensions of the Ingram.

It also allows Bandai to reproduce elements such as the cockpit, pilot and equipment with considerably more detail than would be practical at a smaller scale.

Detailed Internal Construction

One of the highlights of the MG Ingram 2 is what sits underneath the white and black exterior armour.

The Master Grade construction recreates internal mechanical elements beneath the outer panels, giving builders plenty of detail to assemble and paint.

This is particularly effective on the Ingram because the design combines conventional mechanical structures with the protective flexible coverings around its joints.

The finished model looks good straight from the box, but builders willing to paint the internal sections can bring out considerably more mechanical detail.

Flexible Joint Coverings

One of the most recognisable features of the AV-98 Ingram is the black protective material surrounding its joints.

Bandai’s Master Grade kit recreates these flexible joint coverings, helping preserve the distinctive appearance of the Labor while allowing the articulated structure underneath to move.

It’s an unusual construction feature compared with conventional Gunpla and gives the build its own personality.

Because beneath all that immaculate police armour is a machine designed to spend its working life dealing with construction Labors, criminals and Ota’s trigger finger.

Opening Cockpit

The Ingram’s cockpit is built into the upper torso and is reproduced on the Master Grade model.

The cockpit can be opened, revealing the pilot compartment inside and allowing the included pilot figure to be seen.

At 1/35 scale this becomes a genuine feature rather than a tiny detail hidden somewhere inside the chest.

For additional realism, the cockpit and surrounding mechanical areas can be carefully painted and detailed to emphasise the scale of the machine.

Revolver Cannon

Perhaps the most famous weapon carried by the Ingram is its 37mm Revolver Cannon.

Rather than an oversized futuristic Beam Rifle, the Ingram uses a weapon styled like a huge police revolver.

It perfectly suits the grounded technological aesthetic of Patlabor.

The Master Grade Ingram 2 includes the Revolver Cannon for armed poses, allowing you to recreate the classic sight of Unit 2 aiming its enormous sidearm.

Which, given who’s piloting it, is probably the pose you’ll need most often.

Revolver Cannon Storage

One of the clever features of the Ingram design is that its Revolver Cannon doesn’t simply hang from the machine when it isn’t being used.

The weapon can be associated with the storage compartment built into the leg, reproducing the Ingram’s distinctive equipment arrangement.

It’s exactly the sort of small practical detail that makes Patlabor mecha feel like functioning machinery rather than purely fantastical robots.

Stun Stick

For situations where firing an enormous revolver in the middle of Tokyo might perhaps be considered excessive, the Ingram also carries a Stun Stick.

This baton-style weapon is another perfect example of the police influences running throughout the design.

The Stun Stick can be equipped for close-range poses and gives the finished model a very different appearance from the firearm-equipped configuration.

Ota may consider it the less exciting option.

Your display shelf doesn’t have to agree.

Police Shield

The Ingram’s equipment also includes its distinctive shield.

Rather than the colourful heraldic shields commonly associated with Gundams, the Ingram’s shield continues the practical police aesthetic.

Combined with the Revolver Cannon or Stun Stick, it provides several different display combinations and reinforces Unit 2’s unmistakable law-enforcement identity.

Warning Lights & Police Detailing

The red police warning lights mounted around the Ingram are among the small details that make the design instantly recognisable.

Along with the black-and-white armour and police markings, these details transform what could have been another humanoid robot into something that genuinely looks like an enormous piece of Tokyo Metropolitan Police equipment.

Careful painting, panel lining and decal application can make these areas particularly effective on the finished model.

Excellent Painting & Detailing Project

The MG AV-98 Ingram 2 is a fantastic choice for builders who enjoy adding realistic detail.

The predominantly white armour responds particularly well to panel lining and subtle weathering.

Mechanical areas can be picked out using metallic shades.

The black joint coverings provide natural contrast.

Small police markings and warning details help establish scale.

You can keep Unit 2 spotless and parade-ready or add dirt, scratches and grime to represent a Labor that’s just returned from another chaotic Division 2 deployment.

Given Ota’s record, the second option may be more realistic.

A Different Kind of Master Grade

For Gunpla builders who have never tried a Patlabor kit, the MG Ingram 2 offers something genuinely different.

The realistic police aesthetic, flexible joint coverings, cockpit construction, 1/35 scale and conventional weapon designs make the building experience noticeably different from assembling a Gundam.

Yet it still has the engineering-led approach associated with Bandai’s Master Grade range.

It’s an excellent choice if you want a classic Bandai mecha kit that isn’t another Mobile Suit.

Build Your Mobile Police Patlabor Collection

The AV-98 Ingram 2 MG 1/35 is particularly effective when displayed alongside other machines from the Patlabor universe.

Pair Unit 2 with AV-98 Ingram Unit 1 and the difference in their head designs immediately gives the two police Labors their own identities.

Add other Patlabor machines and you can build a display that looks completely different from a conventional Gunpla collection.

It’s also an excellent centrepiece for an urban diorama.

Road barriers, damaged construction equipment, police vehicles and city scenery all suit the grounded world of Patlabor perfectly.

Just make sure Ota isn’t pointing the Revolver Cannon towards anything expensive.
