Go big with one of the most iconic Mobile Suits ever created. The Bandai RX-78-2 Gundam Mega Size 1/48 transforms Amuro Ray’s legendary Gundam from Mobile Suit Gundam into an enormous model standing approximately 375mm tall.

The RX-78-2 Gundam Mega Size 1/48 was created to deliver maximum shelf presence while remaining considerably more approachable to assemble than its size might suggest. Bandai’s Mega Size Model line uses large colour-moulded components, snap-fit construction and simplified assembly techniques to create an impressive finished model without requiring the complexity normally associated with a model of this scale.

Originally released in March 2010, the RX-78-2 was the first entry in Bandai’s Mega Size Model range.

RX-78-2 Gundam

There are Gundams.

And then there’s the Gundam.

The RX-78-2 Gundam is the Earth Federation prototype Mobile Suit piloted by Amuro Ray in the original 1979 Mobile Suit Gundam television series.

Its white, blue, red and yellow colour scheme, V-fin, twin head cameras and instantly recognisable silhouette established a visual identity that continues to influence Gundam designs decades later.

Whether you know it as the RX-78-2, First Gundam, Granddaddy Gundam or simply Gundam, this is where the legend began.

Massive 1/48 Scale

The defining feature of this kit is right there in the name.

Mega Size.

At 1/48 scale, the completed RX-78-2 stands approximately 375mm tall.

That’s around 37.5cm.

Put it beside a typical 1/144 HG or RG and the difference is enormous.

Even compared with a 1/100 Master Grade, the Mega Size Gundam has substantially greater physical presence.

This isn’t the Gundam you squeeze into the remaining gap on a shelf.

This is the Gundam you clear a shelf for.

Designed to Be Easy to Build

Don’t let the size fool you.

The Mega Size range was deliberately designed around simple and accessible construction.

Rather than trying to turn the RX-78-2 into an enormous ultra-complex Master Grade, Bandai focused on making the kit straightforward to assemble while still producing an impressive finished model.

Large components make the construction process easier to follow, while colour separation means the classic Gundam appearance can be achieved without requiring a complete paint job.

It’s an excellent choice if you want something huge without spending days assembling a highly complicated internal frame.

Snap-Fit Construction

The Mega Size RX-78-2 Gundam uses Bandai’s familiar snap-fit approach.

Glue isn’t required for normal assembly.

Parts are moulded in the Gundam’s familiar colours and designed to fit together securely, making the kit suitable for builders with a wide range of experience.

That also makes the Mega Size RX-78-2 surprisingly accessible as a first larger-scale Gundam project.

Big model.

Straightforward build.

Very big result.

Special Runner Separation System

Bandai developed the Mega Size range with ease of assembly in mind, including a runner design that allows many components to be separated from the runners by hand.

This unusual approach was intended to make construction more accessible, particularly for builders who were new to plastic model kits.

Experienced builders can, of course, still use their usual nippers and cleanup techniques to achieve the cleanest possible finish.

And considering the amount of surface area on a 1/48 Gundam, there’s plenty of opportunity to take the build much further.

Detailed Exterior

Simple construction doesn’t mean the finished model has to look simple.

Bandai added extensive panel-line and mechanical surface detail across the large armour sections.

At this scale, those details are far easier to see than they would be on a standard HG model.

A simple panel-line wash can dramatically change the appearance of the finished Gundam, bringing out details across the legs, torso, shoulders and weapons.

The sheer size of the armour also makes it an excellent platform for anyone wanting to practise additional detailing techniques.

Beam Rifle

The RX-78-2 wouldn’t be complete without its classic Beam Rifle.

The weapon is reproduced at the same enormous 1/48 scale as the Gundam itself and can be equipped for the traditional ranged-combat appearance associated with Amuro’s machine.

At this size, even the Beam Rifle has more shelf presence than some smaller model kits.

Pair it with the shield and you’ve got the classic RX-78-2 configuration immediately.

Gundam Shield

The kit also includes the RX-78-2’s unmistakable red and white shield.

Its large size gives the finished model an even stronger visual presence and adds a huge block of colour alongside the Gundam’s predominantly white armour.

Display the shield alongside the Beam Rifle for the classic anime appearance or use it with a Beam Saber for a more aggressive close-combat stance.

Beam Sabers

The RX-78-2’s Beam Sabers are represented as part of the model’s equipment, allowing you to recreate its familiar melee-combat appearance.

The handles are mounted around the backpack when stored, preserving another important feature of the original Gundam design.

With the model standing nearly 38cm tall, even a straightforward Beam Saber pose becomes an impressive display.

Core Fighter Detail

The RX-78-2’s design is closely associated with the Core Fighter/Core Block System, and the Mega Size model incorporates details reflecting the construction of the original Mobile Suit.

The focus of the Mega Size range, however, is primarily on the exterior appearance, straightforward assembly and enormous scale rather than the highly complex internal transformation engineering found in some Master Grade and Perfect Grade releases.

That’s an important part of what makes this kit work.

It’s big without being unnecessarily complicated.

Articulated Construction

Despite the simplified approach, the Mega Size RX-78-2 isn’t simply a giant static statue.

The completed model features articulation throughout the body, allowing the head, arms and legs to be positioned for a variety of standing and combat poses.

The huge scale means even relatively restrained poses look impressive.

This isn’t necessarily a model that needs to be balanced in an extreme aerial pose.

Sometimes standing there looking like a 37.5cm RX-78-2 Gundam is enough.

Perfect for Painting

If you’re looking for a Gundam to customise, the Mega Size RX-78-2 gives you a huge canvas.

Literally.

The large armour panels make painting considerably more forgiving than on smaller-scale kits and provide plenty of room for shading, masking, colour modulation and weathering.

You can reproduce the clean anime appearance.

Create a realistic military-style finish.

Add battle damage.

Apply additional markings.

Experiment with preshading.

Or create your own completely original RX-78-2 colour scheme.

At 1/48 scale, small details that might disappear on a 1/144 kit can become major visual features.

Excellent for Weathering

The Mega Size Gundam is particularly good for weathering projects.

Large feet provide plenty of space for dust and ground effects.

Armour edges can be chipped.

Thrusters can receive heat staining and metallic detailing.

Panel lines can be washed.

Weapons can be given worn metallic finishes.

And subtle streaking across the white armour can give the machine a much heavier, more realistic appearance.

If you’ve ever wanted to create a heavily weathered RX-78-2 but found 1/144 scale a little too small, this gives you considerably more room to work.

A Fantastic Centrepiece

The biggest reason to buy the Mega Size RX-78-2 is also the simplest.

It looks enormous on display.

At approximately 375mm tall, the Gundam naturally becomes the focal point of a collection.

Place smaller HG, RG or MG models around it and the difference in scale becomes part of the display.

It also works particularly well as a standalone model for someone who wants one instantly recognisable Gundam rather than an entire shelf of kits.

Although we should probably warn you:

Buying one giant Gundam does occasionally lead to wanting another giant Gundam.

Shelf manufacturers everywhere rejoice.

Bigger Without the Perfect Grade Complexity

It’s worth understanding what makes the Mega Size RX-78-2 different from a Perfect Grade.

Both are large Gundam model kits, but they’re designed around very different experiences.

A Perfect Grade concentrates on extremely detailed internal construction, complex articulation, layered armour and mechanical gimmicks.

Mega Size concentrates on physical size, visual impact and accessible assembly.

That makes this kit particularly appealing if what you really want is a massive RX-78-2 without committing to the significantly more complicated construction of a PG.

Sometimes you don’t need hundreds of tiny mechanical components.

Sometimes you just want a really, really big Gundam.

The Perfect Introduction to Mega Size Gunpla

The RX-78-2 is an ideal introduction to Bandai’s Mega Size range.

It’s instantly recognisable, relatively straightforward to build and offers enough surface detail to reward more experienced modellers who want to take the finish further.

Build it straight from the box and you’ve got an enormous representation of Amuro Ray’s Gundam.

Add panel lining and markings and the detail starts to come alive.

Paint and weather the entire model and you’ve got the foundation for a serious display project.

That’s the strength of the Mega Size concept.

The basic build is accessible.

How far you take it afterwards is entirely up to you.

Why Add the RX-78-2 Gundam Mega Size 1/48 to Your Collection?

The Bandai RX-78-2 Gundam Mega Size 1/48 takes the most iconic Gundam design of them all and gives it the one thing guaranteed to make it stand out even more:

Size.

Standing approximately 375mm tall, the finished model combines enormous shelf presence with relatively straightforward snap-fit construction, detailed armour surfaces and the RX-78-2’s classic Beam Rifle, Shield and Beam Saber equipment.

It’s equally suitable for builders wanting a spectacular straight build and experienced modellers looking for a large-scale platform for painting, panel lining, decals and weathering.

For anyone searching for an RX-78-2 Gundam Mega Size 1/48, Mega Size Gundam model kit, 1/48 RX-78-2 Gunpla, Amuro Ray Gundam model or large-scale Bandai Gundam kit, this is one of the most impressive ways to put the original Gundam on display.

Add the RX-78-2 Gundam Mega Size 1/48 to your collection and make the original Gundam impossible to miss.
