Gouf MS-07B (Ver. 2.0) MG 1/100

This is no Zaku, boy! No Zaku!

The MG 1/100 MS-07B Gouf Ver. 2.0 gives one of Zeon’s most iconic ground-combat Mobile Suits the full Master Grade Ver. 2.0 treatment. Made famous by Ramba Ral in the original Mobile Suit Gundam, the Gouf combines its unmistakable blue armour with the Heat Rod, Heat Saber, five-barrel machine gun hand and shield.

Released in May 2009, Bandai developed the Ver. 2.0 with engineering shared in part with the MG MS-06J Zaku II Ver. 2.0, deliberately reflecting the Gouf’s development from Zeon’s ground-combat Zaku lineage.

MS-07B Gouf

The MS-07B Gouf was developed as a dedicated ground-combat Mobile Suit for the Principality of Zeon.

Its design clearly retains elements of the Zaku II.

The mono-eye.

The rounded armour.

The shoulder shield.

The exposed power pipes.

But the Gouf is far more than a blue Zaku.

Designed with close-range combat in mind, it incorporates specialised weapons directly into the machine and features improved performance suited to fighting enemy Mobile Suits on Earth.

And thanks to one particular pilot, it became a legend.

Ramba Ral’s Mobile Suit

The Gouf is inseparable from Ramba Ral.

When Ral encounters Amuro Ray and the RX-78-2 Gundam, the veteran Zeon pilot demonstrates exactly what an experienced soldier can achieve against a technically superior machine.

It’s one of the defining confrontations of the original Mobile Suit Gundam.

And it gave us one of Gundam’s most famous lines:

“This is no Zaku, boy! No Zaku!”

More than four decades later, the Gouf remains one of Zeon’s most recognisable Mobile Suits.

Ver. 2.0 Engineering

The original MG Gouf appeared much earlier in the Master Grade line, but Ver. 2.0 represents a major redesign.

Bandai specifically incorporated elements of the MG MS-06J Zaku II Ver. 2.0’s internal construction into the Gouf, reflecting the in-universe relationship between the two machines.

That gives the kit a detailed mechanical foundation underneath the familiar blue exterior armour.

For anyone who enjoys displaying MG kits with selected armour panels removed, there’s plenty underneath worth detailing.

Classic Gouf Proportions

Bandai didn’t radically reinvent the Gouf’s appearance for Ver. 2.0.

Instead, the kit retains the classic proportions associated with the original animation while introducing much more sophisticated internal engineering.

The broad shoulders remain.

The spikes remain.

The aggressive curved armour remains.

And that wonderfully angry-looking mono-eye head remains.

It’s recognisably old-school Zeon on the outside with considerably more modern engineering underneath.

Improved Hip & Skirt Movement

One of the cleverest articulation features is hidden around the waist.

When the front skirt armour moves, the side armour can automatically slide backwards in conjunction with it. This allows the leg to rise without the armour sections awkwardly colliding with one another.

It’s exactly the kind of engineering that defines the better Ver. 2.0 Master Grades.

Rather than simply adding another joint, Bandai considered how the armour itself should move around the underlying frame.

The result is much more natural-looking articulation.

Improved Power Pipe Construction

Zeon loves power pipes.

Gunpla builders haven’t always shared the enthusiasm after assembling dozens of tiny individual pipe sections.

For Gouf Ver. 2.0, Bandai specifically revised the power-pipe construction to make assembly easier.

The pipes remain a major visual element around the waist and head, preserving that classic Zeon mechanical appearance without making their construction unnecessarily frustrating.

Heat Rod

Then we get to the weapon that makes the Gouf immediately recognisable.

The Heat Rod.

This long segmented weapon extends from the Gouf’s right arm and can be positioned in a huge range of shapes.

Bandai recreated the Heat Rod using individual sections connected through ball joints, allowing it to bend and curve while holding the selected shape.

Straight attack.

Curved strike.

Wrapped around an opponent.

Sweeping across the ground.

You have considerable freedom over how the Heat Rod is displayed.

Ball-Jointed Heat Rod

The ball-jointed construction is particularly important at Master Grade scale.

Rather than supplying a simple flexible cable that naturally droops under its own weight, the segmented structure allows you to deliberately shape the weapon.

That makes recreating Ramba Ral’s attacks considerably easier.

It also means the Heat Rod can become a major part of the pose instead of simply hanging from the arm.

Heat Saber

For proper close combat, the Gouf carries its distinctive Heat Saber.

Bandai supplies the weapon with a clear moulded blade, helping distinguish the heated cutting section from the handle.

Combined with the Heat Rod, it gives the Gouf exactly the sort of close-combat loadout you’d expect from a machine designed to get dangerously close to its opponent.

No enormous long-range cannon required.

Just get close enough and start causing problems.

Five-Barrel Machine Gun Hand

The Gouf’s left hand is anything but conventional.

Instead of ordinary fingers, the machine incorporates its famous five-barrel machine gun arrangement.

It’s one of the strangest weapons on any early Zeon Mobile Suit.

And one of the coolest.

The weapon is integrated directly into the hand, giving the Gouf short-range firepower without requiring it to carry a conventional machine gun.

It also gives you one of the classic Gouf poses:

Heat Saber in one hand.

Machine-gun fingers pointed at the enemy.

Ramba Ral clearly having an excellent day.

Gouf Shield

The distinctive Gouf Shield is included.

Its compact curved design complements the Mobile Suit perfectly and provides somewhere to mount the Heat Saber when it’s not being used.

Together with the spiked shoulder armour and machine-gun hand, the shield helps create the unmistakable asymmetric silhouette of the Gouf.

Detailed Internal Structure

As you’d expect from a Ver. 2.0 Master Grade, there’s considerably more happening underneath the armour than you’ll see once construction is complete.

Mechanical detailing runs throughout the internal structure, giving experienced builders plenty of opportunities for additional painting.

Gunmetal.

Steel.

Silver.

Dark grey.

Hydraulic details.

Metallic accents.

You can spend considerably more time painting the internal frame than anyone will ever spend looking at it.

Which, as Master Grade builders know, is entirely normal.

Opening Cockpit

The torso incorporates cockpit detailing appropriate to the Master Grade format, allowing another layer of mechanical interest around the centre of the model.

At 1/100 scale, these smaller details help make the Gouf feel much more like a mechanical vehicle than simply a larger action figure.

Ramba Ral Figure Included

Bandai includes a 1/100 scale Ramba Ral figure with the kit.

That alone is almost compulsory for this particular Mobile Suit.

Put Ramba Ral beside the completed Gouf and the size of the machine becomes immediately apparent.

Crowley Hamon Figure Included

Even better, you also get a 1/100 scale Crowley Hamon figure. Bandai officially lists both Ramba Ral and Hamon figures as part of the Ver. 2.0 package.

The pair are ideal for a small diorama or Zeon ground-force display.

Add a little terrain, some equipment and the Gouf standing behind them and you’ve got the beginnings of a fantastic Mobile Suit Gundam scene.

Perfect Alongside Zaku II Ver. 2.0

If you’ve already built the MG Zaku II Ver. 2.0, the Gouf makes a particularly interesting companion.

Bandai deliberately shares elements of their internal engineering, just as the fictional Gouf developed from the MS-06J ground-combat Zaku.

Put the completed models together and the evolution becomes obvious.

The Zaku is the practical mass-production workhorse.

The Gouf is broader, more aggressive and much more specialised for close combat.

And blue.

Very, very blue.

A Great Opponent for RX-78-2 Gundam

Naturally, another excellent display option is the MG RX-78-2 Gundam Ver. 2.0.

Bandai released that version of the RX-78-2 in 2008, followed by the Gouf Ver. 2.0 in 2009, making them particularly suitable companions from the same era of Master Grade engineering.

Pose Amuro’s Gundam against Ramba Ral’s Gouf and you’ve got one of the most memorable confrontations from the original series.

Classic Master Grade Without Excess

One of the attractions of this generation of MG kits is their balance.

There’s plenty of internal engineering.

Plenty of articulation.

Plenty of mechanical detail.

But the Gouf isn’t covered in enormous backpacks, funnels, transformation mechanisms and hundreds of tiny exterior accessories.

It’s simply a beautifully realised 1/100 version of a classic Zeon Mobile Suit.

Build the frame.

Add the armour.

Give it a sword and Heat Rod.

Done.

Sometimes that’s exactly what you want from a Master Grade.

Excellent Painting & Weathering Potential

The Gouf is also an outstanding weathering project.

It’s a ground-combat machine, so pristine showroom armour isn’t your only option.

Try adding dust around the feet.

Chipping around armour edges.

Scratches across the shield.

Heat effects on the saber.

Metallic wear around the joints.

Dust and dirt around the lower legs.

Gunmetal detailing across the internal frame.

Then finish the blue armour with a slightly flattened top coat.

A heavily weathered Gouf can look absolutely superb.
