Recreate one of the most iconic moments from the Evangelion franchise with the spectacular ARTPLA Sculpture Works Evangelion Test Type-01 Operation Yashima Model Kit from Kaiyodo.
Based on the unforgettable Operation Yashima sequence from Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone, this impressive plastic model kit captures Evangelion Unit-01 in a dramatic firing position as it prepares to unleash the enormous Positron Cannon against the Sixth Angel, Ramiel.
Part of Kaiyodo’s ARTPLA Sculpture Works range, this is not a conventional articulated mecha kit. Instead, the model is designed as a highly detailed fixed-pose sculptural display piece, combining the experience of building and painting a traditional plastic model kit with the dramatic composition and presence of a premium statue.
The centrepiece is the enormous High-Output Second Prototype Self-Propelled 460mm Positron Cannon, measuring approximately 360mm in length when completed and giving the finished display exceptional presence.
Recreate Operation Yashima
Operation Yashima remains one of the defining battles of Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone.
Faced with the almost impenetrable defences of Ramiel, NERV develops a desperate plan to defeat the Angel with an enormous long-range Positron Cannon. Powered using electricity gathered from across Japan, Unit-01 must fire an incredibly precise shot while Unit-00 provides protection.
The ARTPLA Sculpture Works kit captures Unit-01 during this dramatic sequence, positioned behind the huge Positron Cannon in a natural and convincing firing stance.
Rather than simply presenting Unit-01 standing upright, Kaiyodo has recreated the complete feeling of the scene. The crouched posture, positioning of the hands and interaction between the Evangelion and the weapon create a powerful sense of scale and tension.
Based on the Original Sculpture by Akira Tani
The ARTPLA Operation Yashima kit is based on a handcrafted sculpt by Akira Tani. The original sculpt was converted into digital 3D data and restructured for production as an injection-moulded plastic model kit.
This gives the finished model a very different character from a standard articulated action-oriented mecha kit.
The emphasis is placed on sculptural detail, silhouette and dramatic composition. Unit-01’s distinctive armour, elongated proportions and organic design are reproduced alongside the highly mechanical structure of the Positron Cannon.
The contrast between the almost biological appearance of the Evangelion and the huge industrial weapon system creates an impressive display that captures the unique visual style of Evangelion.
Massive 360mm Positron Cannon
One of the most impressive features of this kit is its sheer size.
The Positron Cannon measures approximately 36cm long when completed, making it the dominant feature of the entire composition.
The cannon features extensive mechanical detailing across its barrel, support structures and equipment, giving experienced builders plenty of opportunities for careful painting, shading and weathering.
For modellers who enjoy military science-fiction subjects, this is where the kit becomes particularly interesting. The weapon can be finished with clean anime-style colours or given a more realistic military appearance using metallic paints, washes, dry brushing and subtle weathering effects.
Designed for Traditional Model Builders
Unlike snap-build model kits designed primarily for quick assembly, the ARTPLA Sculpture Works Operation Yashima kit offers a more traditional modelling experience.
The kit requires assembly and is designed to reward painting and careful finishing. Its blue-grey moulding colour was chosen to reflect the nighttime atmosphere of the Operation Yashima battle, while the finished display can be painted to reproduce the screen appearance of Unit-01 and its equipment.
This makes the kit an excellent choice for builders who enjoy:
- Traditional plastic model construction
- Detailed painting projects
- Masking and colour separation
- Panel shading and washes
- Mechanical weathering
- Large display-focused models
- Evangelion dioramas and scene recreations
The fixed composition allows the kit to concentrate on visual impact rather than articulation or transformation mechanisms.
A Model Kit with the Presence of a Statue
The ARTPLA Sculpture Works range occupies an interesting position between traditional plastic modelling and collectible sculpture.
Once completed and painted, the Operation Yashima display has the visual presence of a premium Evangelion statue, but the builder has complete control over the final appearance.
You can reproduce the clean colours of the animated scene, add subtle shadows and highlights to emphasise the sculpting, or create a heavily weathered interpretation of Unit-01 and the Positron Cannon after battle.
The result is a kit that offers a very different building experience from conventional articulated Evangelion model kits.
