The legendary Battle of Britain marked a significant turning point with regard to Germany’s expansion efforts during the Second World War. In preparation of the invasion, the German Air Force launched massive attacks on British cities and airfields of the Royal Air Force during the summer months of 1940. On the other side, there were only 700 Spitfires and Hurricanes flown by young, inexperienced pilots. The 13th of August 1940, also known as “Adlertag” (“Eagle’s Day”), marked the beginning of a series of major attacks in which primarily the Ju 88 and the Ju 87 were used. Following massive losses, the German Air Force ultimately stopped any offensive efforts in May 1941. The Hurricane and Spitfire of the Fighter Command had been victorious.
