Before OCP had RoboCop, it had ED-209.

Developed as part of Omni Consumer Products’ plans to revolutionise law enforcement, ED-209 was supposed to be the ultimate urban pacification machine.

Heavily armoured.

Massively armed.

Completely intimidating.

And unfortunately incapable of understanding stairs.

ED-209’s disastrous boardroom demonstration became one of the defining sequences of RoboCop, establishing both the machine’s terrifying firepower and the film’s pitch-black sense of humour.

The Ultimate OCP Enforcement Machine

ED-209 doesn’t look like a conventional humanoid robot.

There’s no head.

No hands.

And very little attempt to make the machine appear friendly.

Instead, the design combines two enormous reverse-jointed legs with a heavily armoured central body and huge weapon assemblies mounted on either side.

The result looks more like a walking weapons platform than a robot.

Which, considering OCP’s approach to policing, was probably exactly the point.

Approximately 200mm Tall

The completed MODEROID ED-209 stands approximately 200mm tall.

At around 20cm, that’s already a substantial model, but ED-209’s extremely wide body and huge weapon assemblies give it considerably more presence than the height measurement suggests.

Put it alongside a RoboCop figure and the difference in mass immediately sells the idea of Murphy facing something considerably larger and more heavily armed than himself.

Fully Articulated Legs

Good Smile has recreated ED-209’s distinctive leg structure with multiple points of articulation.

The hips, legs and feet can be repositioned, allowing you to adjust the machine’s stance while retaining that unmistakable ED-209 silhouette.

The MODEROID interpretation carefully reproduces the multiple barrels and surrounding mechanical structures, making the weapons one of the most detailed areas of the model.

The launcher cover can be opened, exposing the missiles underneath and giving you the option of displaying ED in a fully armed combat configuration.

Movie-Accurate Mechanical Detailing

One of the biggest attractions of ED-209 has always been the design itself.

The machine is a fantastic example of 1980s science-fiction hardware.

Huge armour panels sit over exposed mechanical joints.

Hydraulic-looking structures are visible throughout the legs.

Weapons appear deliberately oversized.

And the entire machine looks like something built by a defence contractor that was never once asked what the word “subtle” meant.

The MODEROID kit captures that industrial appearance while translating it into plastic-model form.

A lightly weathered finish works particularly well because ED-209 should look like a piece of industrial military hardware rather than a pristine superhero robot.

No Glue Required

MODEROID kits use snap-fit construction, so glue isn’t normally required for basic assembly.

Parts are supplied on runners in multiple colours and are designed to be assembled using familiar plastic-model techniques.

If you’re already comfortable building Gunpla, 30MM or similar snap-fit kits, the basic construction process should feel familiar.

A decent pair of nippers and something for cleaning the nub marks will get you started.

ED-209 vs RoboCop

ED-209 makes considerably more sense when there’s a RoboCop nearby.

The contrast between the two designs is fantastic.

RoboCop is essentially human-shaped, controlled and relatively compact.

ED-209 is enormous, awkward and built around overwhelming firepower.

One represents Murphy attempting to retain his humanity.

The other represents OCP deciding that policing would be considerably easier if they simply attached enough guns to a walking tank.

One of Cinema’s Greatest Robots

ED-209’s screen time in the original RoboCop isn’t enormous.

It didn’t need to be.

The boardroom demonstration alone secured the machine’s place in science-fiction history.

Its mechanical movement, threatening voice, absurd weaponry and complete inability to negotiate a staircase made ED-209 simultaneously intimidating and hilarious.

Few fictional robots have managed to be genuinely frightening and completely useless within the same film.
