Witch From Mercury Gundam Calibarn HG 1/144 #26

Build Suletta Mercury’s spectacular late-series Mobile Suit with the Bandai Spirits HG 1/144 Gundam Calibarn #26 from Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury, complete with its distinctive Variable Rod Rifle and rainbow-coloured Shell Unit effects.

The Gundam Calibarn HG 1/144 is one of the standout Gunpla releases from the Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury High Grade range. Piloted by Suletta Mercury, the Calibarn combines an elegant predominantly white design with its enormous broom-inspired Variable Rod Rifle, GUND-BIT equipment and striking Shell Unit effects.

For collectors of Witch from Mercury Gunpla, the Calibarn is an essential companion to the Gundam Aerial, Gundam Aerial Rebuild and Gundam Schwarzette.

X-EX01 Gundam Calibarn

The X-EX01 Gundam Calibarn plays a major role during the final stages of Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury.

Unlike many other Mobile Suits from the series, the Calibarn has an almost completely white exterior, giving it an unusually clean appearance.

That simplicity is deceptive.

Once the Shell Units illuminate with their distinctive rainbow pattern and the Variable Rod Rifle is fitted, the Calibarn becomes one of the most visually distinctive Gundams in the entire series.

The HG kit captures that contrast particularly well.

Suletta Mercury’s Gundam Calibarn

The Calibarn is closely associated with Suletta Mercury, who pilots the Mobile Suit during the climax of The Witch from Mercury.

Its role in the closing stages of the story makes it a particularly significant Mobile Suit for fans building a collection around Suletta and the major Gundams from the series.

Display it alongside the HG Gundam Aerial and HG Gundam Aerial Rebuild to show the progression of Suletta’s principal Mobile Suits throughout the anime.

Variable Rod Rifle

The most immediately recognisable piece of equipment included with the HG Gundam Calibarn is its enormous Variable Rod Rifle.

The weapon incorporates large thruster units and has a distinctive silhouette inspired by a witch’s broom, perfectly matching the themes and imagery running throughout The Witch from Mercury.

Its sheer size makes the Calibarn instantly recognisable when displayed.

Bandai designed the HG kit so the Variable Rod Rifle can be positioned alongside the articulated Gundam, allowing you to recreate the Calibarn’s distinctive combat appearance.

It’s a rifle.

It’s propulsion equipment.

It looks like a broom.

Sometimes Gundam design really does know exactly what it’s doing.

Rainbow Shell Unit Effects

One of the highlights of the HG 1/144 Gundam Calibarn model kit is the recreation of its colourful Shell Unit effects.

Bandai uses in-mould decoration for the chest Shell Unit, producing the rainbow-coloured Permet appearance as a pre-finished component. A standard non-emissive version is also included, giving builders a choice of appearance.

The antenna and other areas use additional colour reproduction to capture the Calibarn’s distinctive rainbow effect.

Against the predominantly white armour, these colourful details immediately draw the eye and give the finished model a completely different character from most other Gundams.

GUND-BIT Equipment

The Gundam Calibarn is also equipped with the familiar GUND-BIT technology seen throughout The Witch from Mercury.

The individual Bit components can be mounted around the Gundam to form its defensive equipment, creating the completed Escutcheon configuration.

They can also be separated for display, opening up additional posing possibilities for anyone looking to recreate the Calibarn’s appearance during the final battles of the series.

Display the GUND-BITs Separately

The HG Calibarn is compatible with Bandai’s separately available display-base equipment for recreating the GUND-BITs deployed around the Mobile Suit.

This is particularly effective with the Calibarn because its clean white armour and colourful Shell Unit effects contrast beautifully with a full aerial GUND-BIT display.

For a more straightforward shelf setup, the Bits can simply remain attached to the model.

Either way, there’s plenty to look at.

Excellent Modern High Grade Articulation

Like the other kits in the Witch from Mercury HG Gunpla range, the Gundam Calibarn benefits from modern Bandai engineering designed to provide strong articulation without making the build unnecessarily complicated.

The shoulders, arms, torso, hips, knees and ankles offer plenty of movement for dynamic poses, while the model is designed to handle the unusual proportions of the large Variable Rod Rifle.

This makes the Calibarn equally suitable for a clean standing display or a more dramatic aerial combat pose.

Fantastic Colour Separation

The Calibarn’s predominantly white design might initially look simple, but there is plenty of detail throughout the model.

Bandai uses moulded colour separation, clear components, stickers and the specially decorated Shell Unit parts to recreate the appearance of the Mobile Suit without requiring painting.

That makes the HG Gundam Calibarn an excellent straight build while still leaving plenty of opportunities for experienced builders to add panel lining, detailing or their own custom finish.

The white armour is also an excellent canvas for anyone who wants to create a completely original Calibarn colour scheme.

A Standout Witch From Mercury Gunpla

The HG Gundam Calibarn #26 has a very different visual identity from many of the other Mobile Suits in The Witch from Mercury.

Where the Gundam Aerial uses strong blue, red and yellow Gundam colours, the Calibarn’s predominantly white exterior creates a much cleaner silhouette.

Then you add the rainbow Permet effects and enormous broom-like rifle.

Clean and understated suddenly leave the room.

The result is a model that looks excellent either on its own or as the centrepiece of a larger Witch from Mercury Gunpla collection.
