No rifles. No cannons. No compromise. Gundam Epyon was designed for a pilot willing to face the enemy head-on — and Real Grade #38 gives it some of the best melee-focused engineering in the RG range.

The RG 1/144 Gundam Epyon #38 recreates the fearsome red Mobile Suit from Mobile Suit Gundam Wing as a completely new Real Grade design. Bandai Spirits engineered the kit around Epyon’s distinctive fighting style, with advanced articulation for two-handed Beam Sword poses, a highly flexible Heat Rod, extensively articulated wings and a transformation into its monstrous MA Mode.

Released on 30 September 2023, this is far more than a scaled-down version of an older Epyon kit. Bandai introduced original RG interpretations throughout the design, including wing mechanics inspired by a winged dragon and additional articulation specifically developed around Epyon’s transformation and close-combat weapons.

OZ-13MS Gundam Epyon

Few Mobile Suits from Gundam Wing have the presence of Gundam Epyon.

Developed by Treize Khushrenada, Epyon represents a very different philosophy from most Gundams.

There’s no conventional Beam Rifle.

No giant long-range cannon.

No enormous arsenal hanging from every available hardpoint.

Instead, Epyon is built around extremely powerful close-combat equipment.

A massive Beam Sword.

A segmented Heat Rod.

And the performance required to get close enough to use them.

It’s a Gundam that effectively looks at ranged combat and says:

Come closer.

From Mobile Suit Gundam Wing

Epyon appears during the latter stages of Mobile Suit Gundam Wing and becomes one of the series’ most important Mobile Suits.

Its striking crimson armour immediately separates it from the five primary Gundams, while the machine’s dragon-like transformation and enormous wings make it one of the most recognisable designs of the After Colony timeline.

For anyone building a Gundam Wing collection, Epyon is an essential counterpart to Wing Gundam and Wing Gundam Zero.

Completely New Real Grade Design

Bandai developed the RG Gundam Epyon as a completely new model rather than relying on an older 1/144 interpretation.

That allowed the designers to rethink how Epyon should move.

The objective wasn’t simply to give it lots of joints.

The articulation was specifically designed around the movements Epyon needs to perform — particularly its huge sweeping Beam Sword attacks and transformation into MA Mode.

That makes a major difference once you start posing it.

Designed Around the Beam Sword

Epyon’s Beam Sword is enormous.

So Bandai designed the body around actually being able to use it convincingly.

The torso incorporates a combination of two-axis and single-axis swinging movement, along with forward movement through the abdominal section.

That allows the upper body to lean naturally into aggressive sword attacks rather than remaining rigidly upright.

It’s particularly effective when creating two-handed poses.

Give Epyon the sword.

Lean the torso forward.

Bring both arms above the head.

Suddenly the entire model looks like it’s putting its weight behind the attack.

Advanced Shoulder Movement

The shoulders received similarly specialised engineering.

Sections of the shoulder armour can deploy as the arms move, allowing Epyon to raise its arms while maintaining the intended position of the shoulder armour.

That sounds like a relatively small detail.

Until you try to make a Gundam hold an enormous sword over its head.

On many older kits, the shoulders quickly get in the way.

Here, the armour moves with the pose.

It’s a great example of Bandai engineering the model around the character rather than simply adding articulation for the sake of putting more joints on the box.

Additional Wrist & Forearm Articulation

Epyon’s wrists and forearms also incorporate additional movement.

An extra articulation axis above the wrist combines with forearm rotation, giving the hands greater freedom when positioning the Beam Sword.

The result is much more natural weapon handling.

Two-handed attacks.

Sideways slashes.

Sword raised overhead.

Low aggressive stances.

The RG can pull off poses that really suit Epyon’s fighting style.

Beam Sword

The enormous Beam Sword is naturally included.

This is Epyon’s signature weapon and one of the most distinctive melee weapons from Gundam Wing.

Rather than being powered through a conventional self-contained weapon arrangement, the sword is connected to Epyon’s body.

Bandai recreates that connection using an actual lead wire cable running between the Beam Sword and its mounting latch.

That cable adds a fantastic mechanical element to the finished model.

And once the huge beam blade is fitted, there’s absolutely no mistaking which Gundam you’re looking at.

Heat Rod

Then there’s the Heat Rod.

Integrated into Epyon’s shield, this long segmented weapon can lash around opponents, strike at range and create some wonderfully aggressive poses.

Bandai uses an Advanced MS Joint for the Heat Rod itself, giving the weapon a combination of sharp mechanical shaping and flexible movement.

It can be curved.

Twisted.

Swept around the body.

Or extended outward for an attack.

The official design specifically allows the Heat Rod to form flowing spiral shapes rather than simply behaving like a rigid segmented stick.

Shield

Epyon’s distinctive shield is included and serves as the mounting point for the Heat Rod.

Its relatively compact design works perfectly with the machine’s close-combat role.

Beam Sword in one hand.

Shield and Heat Rod on the other arm.

That’s the classic Epyon configuration.

No need to strap another six weapons to it.

Incredible Wing Engineering

The wings are one of the highlights of RG #38.

Bandai didn’t simply hinge them onto the backpack.

The RG design introduces an original interpretation based around the movement and appearance of a winged dragon.

As the main wings move, smaller feather-like sections deploy in conjunction with them.

The mounting structure also allows the height of the wings to be adjusted.

This gives you considerably more control over Epyon’s silhouette.

Bring them inward for a tighter standing pose.

Raise them.

Spread them wide.

Sweep them backwards.

The difference can be dramatic.

Winged Dragon Inspiration

The dragon inspiration runs throughout the Real Grade interpretation.

It’s particularly obvious once you transform Epyon into its alternate configuration.

Instead of treating the transformation purely as an engineering necessity, Bandai pushed the design toward a more creature-like appearance.

That makes the transformed Epyon look considerably more convincing than simply having a Gundam lying horizontally with its legs folded over.

Which, historically, hasn’t always been guaranteed with transforming Mobile Suits.

Transformation into MA Mode

Yes, the RG Gundam Epyon fully transforms into its Mobile Armor configuration.

The body rearranges while the legs form the distinctive twin-headed structure at the front.

Bandai added additional mechanical details specifically to make the transformed machine more expressive.

And this is where things get particularly interesting.

Opening Dragon Mouths

In MA Mode, the transformed legs become the dragon-like heads.

The horns and mouths can be opened, giving the transformed Epyon a much more expressive appearance.

It’s a small addition that makes a huge difference.

Instead of the heads simply being decorative shapes formed from the legs, they actually look like mechanical creatures.

Flexible Dragon Necks

Bandai went even further.

The lower legs incorporate pull-out ball joints, creating a flexible neck-like movement when Epyon is transformed.

Additional articulation through the thighs allows the transformed sections to move with a more natural, serpentine appearance.

Combined with the opening mouths and articulated wings, the finished MA Mode has considerably more personality than you might expect from a Gundam transformation.

Locking Hip Mechanism

Transformations and highly articulated hips don’t always get along.

So Bandai incorporated a locking mechanism into the hip joints.

This allows the hips to achieve a wide range of movement during normal posing while still providing the rigidity required for transformation.

It’s another example of the RG being designed from the beginning around both configurations rather than treating the MA Mode as an afterthought.

Articulated Knee Blades

Even the blades around Epyon’s knees have received attention.

These components move in conjunction with the knee articulation, preventing them from interfering with natural kneeling positions.

Again, it’s a relatively small feature.

But combine enough of these small engineering decisions and you end up with a model that poses far more naturally than its design initially suggests it should.

Real Grade Surface Detail

As you’d expect from a modern RG, Epyon’s armour is packed with mechanical detailing.

The famous crimson colour scheme is broken up across multiple surfaces and armour layers, giving the finished model considerably more visual depth than a straightforward anime-style interpretation.

Then you have the Realistic Decals.

Apply the full marking set and Epyon becomes a much more mechanical-looking machine, with the extra markings helping emphasise individual armour panels and equipment sections.

Two Display Adapters Included

Bandai includes separate display joints for both configurations.

One is intended for MS Mode.

The other is designed for MA Mode.

That’s particularly useful for the transformed configuration, where getting Epyon into the air really allows the winged-dragon silhouette to work properly.

An Action Base is sold separately, but the required connection adapters are in the box.

A Fantastic Match for RG Wing Gundam

The obvious display partner is the RG Wing Gundam.

Bandai released the TV-style RG Wing Gundam with its own original bird-inspired wing articulation and Bird Mode transformation, making it an excellent technological counterpart to Epyon.

Put them together and you get two completely different interpretations of transforming Gundam Wing Mobile Suits.

Wing Gundam with its Buster Rifle.

Epyon with its Beam Sword and Heat Rod.

Ranged firepower versus close-combat brutality.

Excellent Customisation Potential

Epyon’s deep red armour already gives it enormous shelf presence, but the RG detailing makes it particularly rewarding for additional finishing.

A darker panel line can emphasise the armour separation.

Metallic detailing works brilliantly around the internal mechanical components.

The wings can benefit from subtle shading.

The Heat Rod looks fantastic with carefully picked-out segments.

And the Beam Sword cable is crying out for some additional mechanical detailing around its connection points.

A matte finish across the armour combined with selected metallic or gloss components can make this kit look exceptional.

Why Add Gundam Epyon RG 1/144 #38 to Your Collection?

Because RG Epyon isn’t simply a highly detailed 1/144 version of the Mobile Suit — Bandai redesigned its engineering around what makes Epyon unique.

The torso, shoulders, forearms and wrists have been developed to let the machine convincingly swing its enormous Beam Sword. The Heat Rod uses an Advanced MS Joint to produce sweeping, twisting attacks. The wings feature linked movement inspired by a winged dragon. And when transformed, the movable neck sections and opening mouths give the MA Mode an unexpectedly creature-like quality.

It also captures exactly why Epyon remains such a popular Gundam Wing design.

It’s red.

It’s enormous.

It transforms into a two-headed mechanical dragon.

And while everyone else was arguing about increasingly powerful rifles and cannons, Epyon apparently decided a massive sword and a red-hot mechanical whip were perfectly adequate.

For Mobile Suit Gundam Wing collectors, Epyon fans and builders looking for one of the more sophisticated modern Real Grades, RG #38 is an outstanding addition to the collection.

Beam Sword connected. Heat Rod deployed. Wings spread. Zero System active. Gundam Epyon doesn’t need a Beam Rifle — because if you’re close enough to see it, you’ve already got a much bigger problem.
